Peter William Field

Obituary
It is with sadness that we report the passing of Peter Field on January 31st 2021 in Watford General Hospital.  Born in Rucklers Lane Kings Langley, Peter was to live in the village all of his life. Peter was happy living and being part of the Kings Langley community.  He was a local boy proud of his background, his locality and its history.  In his last words to the family he wrote that he hoped to return to Kings Langley and see the ‘Lights of Home’ and return to Whitlars Drive and his dear neighbours.

Peter is remembered as a caring, thoughtful and kind man.  It came naturally to him to care and look after his family and friends, always happy with a smile on his face.  Nothing was too much trouble for Peter to help and support those around him.

Peter was born at home, Rucklers Lane in Kings Langley on the 23rd August 1939.  Peter grew up in Rucklers Lane with his parents Violet and William Field, twin sister Ann and later they were joined by ‘little sister’ Janet and brother Patrick.  Peter always described growing up in Rucklers Lane fondly where he had a happy childhood with everything they needed including a corner shop, farm, greengrocers and Mission Hall for social events.

Peter first attended Kings Langley Infant School before transferring to Nash Mills Junior Church School and then to Corner Hall Boys School.  Peter left school at 15 and started work straight away.  After a short spell wiring houses Peter started work at John Dickinson’s, Apsley.  His career as an Electrical Technician took him onto working at Nash Mills, Coopers in Berkhamsted, Sun Printers and finally the Daily Mirror.  He stayed here until he took early retirement in 2002.

Many of the hobbies and interests from childhood he enjoyed later in life – electrics, film & cinema, projects and making things, painting, photography and using the dark room at Corner Hall School.

He was to meet his wife Doreen when attending the regular Watford Town Hall dance and when they worked together at John Dickinson’s.  Peter and Doreen found they had a lot in common and as time went by their love and friendship blossomed until they were happily married on 15th August 1970.

Peter along with Doreen were delighted when they found out that they were to become proud parents and had their much loved and waited for child, Kerry Rose in March 1972.

Peter was a true ‘villager’ all of his life being an active member of societies and clubs including the Kings Langley Local History and Museum Society and Kings Langley Parish Council, where he met and made good friends and colleagues.  He enjoyed being a local film maker putting on film and slide shows for local clubs and residents, making and editing his own films.  One of these being a DVD which the Kings Langley Local History & Museum Society produced, a collection of old amateur films titled 'Kings Langley on Film No1', which was mostly put together by Peter and he provided the commentary.    Peter also enjoyed being the photographer for the Kings Langley Garden Competition for many years.  Peter regularly wrote articles for different societies and publications including The Villager, The Hemel Gazette and Keeping in Touch - Heart to Herts.  Peter was also a member of the Hemel Hempstead Movie Makers.  Peter made his first film in 1960 and joined the club a few years later.

In 1998, on a perfect summer afternoon his daughter Kerry was to marry Paul McCarthy at Kings Langley Church.  A very proud day for Peter.  This was followed by the arrival of his truly loved and adored grandchildren Lewis in 2001 and Sian in 2004.  His role as Grandad ‘Pete’ will be forever in their hearts remembering the love and care he gave them and the fun activities and time they shared.

Doreen sadly passed away in January 2007 after not having the best of health during her later years, which was a great loss to both Peter and Kerry.

In the following years Peter continued to be an active and enthusiastic member of the Kings Langley community and attended clubs and societies, putting on slide and film shows and enjoying trips with Miami Motors.

He made many good friends at the Heart to Herts support group.  He joined in with the activities, outings and the regular meet up to distribute their newsletter.  He met Marie during this time and they formed a very happy friendship and companionship that was to last for the remainder of his life.

Peter enjoyed both his 70th and 80th birthdays in style and was able to celebrate with family and friends on both occasions at functions that he organised with daughter Kerry.

Peter’s heart condition proved a challenge for him in the later part of his life, starting with a quadruple heart bypass in 2001.  He went on to have a defib pacemaker fitted following a particularly difficult time when he was in Intensive Care at Hammersmith Hospital.  However, he always faced his heart failure bravely and with a positive attitude and bounced back from being very poorly many times to face the next chapter of his life story.

Sadly Peter’s heart failure towards the end of 2020 was making breathing increasingly difficult and he struggled on for some time but ended up in hospital on the 19th January. After various treatments that were not proving as successful as normal the family had hoped he would come home as planned to spend the remainder of his time with them.  Unfortunately, Peter caught Covid and this battle was too much for his tired and worn out heart and he sadly passed away peacefully on the 31st January 2021 at Watford General Hospital.

The funeral service was led by Alan Baldwin on 17th February 2021, 3pm at West Herts Crematorium.  Peter started his journey from his home of Whitlars Drive Kings Langley, past Rucklers Lane and back through Kings Langley High Street before reaching the crematorium.

The family would like to thank the NHS Heart Consultants, Watford General Hospital, Dr Kataria (The Nap Surgery) and the Community Heart Failure Nurses for their care and their family and friends for their many cards of condolence.  Finally, a special thank you to A&C Tadman for all the help and kindness at such a sad time.
